Formation of precipitate

Formation of Precipitate:

Sometimes, when two solutions are mixed together, a solid gets separated from the solution. The solid thus separated is called the precipitate. Thus, precipitate is a ‘solid product’ which separates out from the solution during a chemical reaction. The chemical reaction between potassium iodide and lead nitrate is characterized by the formation of a yellow precipitate of lead iodide. Take lead nitrate solution in a test tube and potassium iodide solution in the other. Both lead nitrate and potassium iodide solutions are white in colour. On mixing these two, a colourless potassium nitrate solution and yellow precipitate of lead iodide are formed.
